Zeus says...

Here is the reading and the questions (and yes, of course, you have to answer the questions!!!)

The Story of Socrates

Hello.  My name is Plato and I am here to tell you the story of a great man, who today was sentenced to death.  This man was my teacher, Socrates.
Socrates was born is Greece in 469 B.C.  He had trained to become a sculptor and had studied the sciences of geometry and astronomy. At one time he served in the army as a hoplite soldier! He also pursued philosophy, the love of wisdom.  As he educated himself he always tried to understand why things happened in the world.  He became famous for being a great teacher and seeker of truth.  For this he was punished.
Had you met Socrates on the street, you would not have imagined that he possessed such a great mind.  He was quite unattractive – short and bald with beady eyes and a snub nose.  He dressed in rags, and except for fine foods, he stayed away from material things and pleasures.
All that was important to Socrates was his teaching.  He tried to get others to reason by questioning their beliefs and seeking truth.  Here in Athens a new democracy is emerging that affects our whole society.  A group of teachers known as the “Sophists” has been growing.  Sophists do not believe that truth can be found.  Instead, they believe that truth is relative, and they deny the existence of universal standards to guide human actions.  Many have become paid teachers who instruct young men in subjects such as public speaking, rhetoric, and philosophy.  All of these are important if one is to have a career in politics.  Unfortunately, many Sophists believe that it is more important to argue effectively and persuade others to your side than it is to be right.
Socrates was a big critic of the Sophists, for he believed that seeking truth was far greater than anything else.  An unpaid teacher, he taught on the city streets so that anyone could approach him and enter into the conversation.  This is how I, Plato, first met him.
Socrates taught by asking questions in what became known as “Socratic Dialogue” or the “Socratic Method.”  Socrates would examine someone else’s ideas trying to discover truth.  He would start by asking a pupil a question and then press mercilessly about why they believed a certain way.  More and more questions would be posed and challenged, and answers ridiculed, sometimes for hours!  Many students became offended, irritated, and annoyed.  However, Socrates really wanted to help others reveal ignorance, observe, analyze, and possibly gain a deeper understanding.  He was always open minded and was an inspiring teacher.
Some Athenians, who began to resent Socrates, brought serious charges against him.  They claimed that he was not religious and that he was corrupting the youth of the polis.  They brought him to trial, and still Socrates refused to admit any wrongdoings.  Socrates was convicted and fined about $1,000 by today’s standards.  He refused to pay and escaped jail.  Then he was offered the choice of being banished from Athens forever or committing suicide by drinking hemlock poison.  Although I and many of his other followers pleaded with him to live, he was not afraid of dying and chose the hemlock.  He believed that being banished from his beloved Athens was worse than death.  Upon his death, he asked us, his pupils, to continue his teachings.
I, Plato, fulfilled this vow by writing his teachings in two famous works, Socratic Dialogue and The Republic.  After Socrates died, I began a school called The Academy, where I taught math, science and philosophy.  One of my most promising students is named Aristotle, a man who will later go on to teach Alexander the Great!

1.    Name a famous student of Socrates.__Plato_____________________

2.    Describe Socrates’ appearance.

   (remind you of someone?)

3.    What did the Sophists teach and to whom?
Truth is relative so it cannot be found.  That means, everyone has a different idea of what is "Perfect" so therefore there is no such thing as "perfect".

4.    How did Socrates differ from the Sophists?

5.    What choice did Socrates make as his punishment?

6.    What are the achievements of Plato?

7.    Create a chart to show how Socrates influenced Alexander the Great.

Think back to ancient times, before television, computers, and cell phones.  Try to go a week without "screens".  Unless needed for school, try to limit how much TV you watch, video games you play, and internet you use for entertainment.  Go outside, read a book, take a walk with a friend, etc...  Although I'm not expecting a miracle, have a parent or guardian sign off with an estimate of your screen time.  See if you can get it down to zero by Friday!  Good luck and have fun!

Science 2/1

"Hmmmmm, How can I tell Mista Meehan about my kickin’ experiment?  Hey I know I can write an abstract!"

An abstract is a way for scientist to communicate their lab work quickly to their colleagues, usually in a journal or magazine.  So you are kind of writing a snap shot of your lab work.  In this case, tell me about your discoveries during this investigation (how does force affect motion or F=ma).  Your statement should answer (or show me) the following:
o What it is you investigated
o How you investigated
o The data and results (show your graph)
o Did your lab work answer your question and if so, how (prove it)

FCAs Writing an abstract:
FCA # 1: Written scientifically (talk about the car, track and experiment). No personal pronouns!
FCA # 2: Using data properly in your writing

Science HW 1/8

Sorry I late with the blog - my www was down for a while on Fri.

Please plot your results from the air trolley lab using the following guidelines:

1. x axis is the number of turns - go up by 5's or 10's.
2. y axis should be Xf in cm - I can't tell you the interval to use - it depends on the data.
3. plot your points from the data you collected, then find the slope of the line - this will give you the position per turn (y/x).
4. Discuss your lab work and answer the original question.
5. Discuss the variables that affected the flight of the air trolley.

This should be done on a separate sheet of paper and handed in on Monday (unless you discussed lack of data with me prior to Friday)

Original question: How does the number of turns of the propeller affect the flight of the air trolly?

Thanks Green

English (Thursday, 1/7)

No Homework, BUT....
I just added a link (to your right) that has some great websites to help you publish your writing.  That just means I would REALLY like to encourage some of you who actually enjoy writing to start thinking about sending it off to get published.  There are so many great magazines and contests for kids your age that are always looking for your work.  It could even be a letter to the editor of a local paper.  For example, I had one student write a letter to the editor about how kids riding skateboards were treated unfairly in town and it was published in the newspaper for his town.
We don't have a lot of time outside of class for me to spend much time on it, but it doesn't mean I don't think it is very important.  After all, isn't it more meaningful if you actually do something with the work you complete in school?  I could help find the most beneficial place for you to submit your writing - and it could be anything from poems, to short stories, to song lyrics, to actual books.  Did you know Danielle is writing a real book?  (hope that won't embarass you Danielle; you should be very proud though!).
I also have a book in class called Go Public that is full of great magazines and contests where you can submit your writing.  I made a sort of "cheat sheet" to help narrow down all the choices.  A lot of them are on the website I added (to your right).  Maddie is submitting one of her poems....

Wednesday's English Homework (12/9)

Some of you had class when "No Homework" was posted.  That's because, technically, there is nothing due tomorrow.  If you had English later in the day, all I did was post that your Discussion Question was due this Friday, December 11th.
The Discussion Question is over "The Necklace" and is Part D on the back page of the story packet.  You have a choice of any of the four questions listed there.  The FCA's are also listed.  You will be responsible for filling in an Outline Sheet, then typing up your question and handing both in on Friday.  If you didn't get one today, make sure to grab an Outline Sheet tomorrow.  They are on a chair in front of where the homework is posted.

Pre-Algebra:  Pg. 208, 1-12 all (show all work) and Pg. 705, 11-19 all.  Hey, you guys..I was a little disappointed that more of you didn't take advantage of the extra credit that was available last night..not too many of you are in a position to shrug off extra points....think about what you're doing...
