Science 3-22

Do the following open response questions
(Except for Class 3, you  choose 1)

Question 1:
Magnesium oxide, MgO(s), is an ionic compound. Water, H2O(l), is a covalent compound.

a. Explain how atoms are held together in both ionic and covalent compounds.
The bonding of atoms in a compound usually makes them more stable than atoms that exist by themselves.
b. Choose one of the given compounds, MgO(s) or H2O(l), and explain in detail how its atoms bond to form a stable compound. You may use a diagram in your response.

Question 2:
Sodium has an atomic number of 11 and a mass number of 23.
a. Identify the types of subatomic particles located in the nucleus of a sodium atom. Compare the properties of each type of particle.
b. Where is most of a sodium atom’s mass located? Explain your answer.
c. Identify the subatomic particles that are found in the energy levels outside the nucleus of a sodium atom. Describe the number and arrangement of these particles.
d. Explain the role of electrons in a chemical reaction between atoms of two different elements
